Article in The Druk Journal (2025): “Gelephu as a Model for Mindful Mental Wellbeing and Longevity – Building Cities that Heal”
In 2025, Elżbieta Jabłońska published the article “Gelephu as a Model for Mindful Mental Wellbeing and Longevity – Building Cities that Heal” in The Druk Journal, one of Bhutan’s leading publications on public policy, society, and development. The article brings together her long-standing engagement with Bhutan and Gross National Happiness with her work on mental wellbeing, healthy longevity, and the ways in which physical and social environments shape human health.
Cities That Heal: Rethinking the Relationship Between Place, Health and Longevity
Can a city be designed not simply as a place to live, but as an environment that actively supports mental wellbeing, healthy longevity, and human connection? The article explores Gelephu Mindfulness City as an opportunity to rethink the relationship between urban development and human health. Drawing on Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, mindfulness, environmental design, and emerging scientific perspectives, it examines how the places we create can influence how people feel, connect, age, and live over time.
Gelephu offers a rare opportunity to embed these principles into a city from the beginning rather than retrofit them later. The article develops the idea of Cities That Heal — urban environments designed to support psychological resilience, social connection, healthier lives, and long-term wellbeing alongside economic and environmental development. In this sense, Gelephu can become more than a new city: it can serve as a living model for a different architecture of longevity, showing how Bhutanese wisdom and contemporary science can help shape the cities of the future.
